Is an addicted person a weak person

Sometimes it feels as though we will never have the willpower to say “no” when a joint is being passed to us. Despite our numerous attempts to quit, there are those around us who smoke sporadically without difficulty.

If only we were stronger, we could resist.

If only we could make the decision, everything would change.

But what does it mean to have mental strength?

Often, we define mental strength as the ability to handle life’s difficulties, crises, and obstacles that hinder our goal achievement. Those who develop these abilities are perceived as strong individuals.

However, the reality is slightly more complicated.

Consider Tommy, a 26-year-old who graduated with honors following full college education and a nine-month journey through a cross-country road trip.

Contrast him with James, also 26, who remains uncertain about his future path despite a half-completed college education, a year and two-month-long cross-country road trip funded by his parents, and a series of short-term, varied jobs.

At a glance, Tommy appears mentally stronger. He achieves goals, transitions smoothly through life stages, and maintains focus.

As a child, Tommy received abundant attention from his parents and wider family, entering adolescence with well-developed social skills and self-confidence. These qualities enabled him to feel a sense of belonging among his peers.

In contrast, James endured considerable frustration due to his parents’ unavailability, which culminated in their divorce when he was only five years old. Entering his teenage years, he felt burdened by the harshness of life and a lack of love. This resulted in deficient social skills, getting in the way of his integration into his peer group.

Our childhood experiences profoundly shape the way we experience our lives. While Tommy experiences life as stable and non-threatening, James experiences it as an unstable journey that could shatter at any moment.

Yet, in many ways, James’s resilience is more impressive. From his youth, he shouldered significant responsibilities following his parents’ divorce. He faced many more social challenges during his life, experienced more setbacks, and confronted a harsher reality.

So, who is stronger: Tommy or James?

To paint an accurate picture, our strength should be assessed in relation to the total struggles we’ve encountered in life, not merely the end result. Furthermore, mental strength can be cultivated. Hence, we often observe people who’ve endured hardship managing crises more effectively, even if they bloom later than their peers.

During a detoxification process, cannabis withdrawal unearths many hidden issues. It’s essential to address these challenges from a perspective that takes into account our life experiences and true coping capabilities rather than a critical, comparative viewpoint focused solely on the outcomes we’ve achieved.
